Second Season Doe

I filled my mule deer tag this past Saturday.  A nice, tasty doe for the freezer.  I used my trusty Remington Model 700LH 270.  The second rifle season in Colorado ended Sunday evening.  Third season begins this Saturday on November second.
 

GSP National Futurity Post #3: Elsie Has Her Run

 We had a great time experiencing the German Shorthaired Pointer Nationals in Eurka, KS last week.  Elsie had a great run.  She had everything the judges were looking for, speed, birdiness, agility, grace, and good handling, but in her 30 minutes she didn't have a bird find, which means no opportunity for a placement from the judges.  Elsie was handled by pro trainer G.F. Henry from Roscoe, Nebraska, who did an excellent job.  Glenn and I were able to watch her run from horseback.  A great experience a lot of fun.

It was very interesting to see so many GSPs in one place at the field trial.  It makes you realize how important good breeding has been to the success of the breed.

Congratulations to the many owners, handlers, and breeders who competed in this years GSP Nationals.

GSP National Futurity Post #2: Futurity to Begin on Saturday

The GSP Nationals was hit with hard rain during the first few days of the event, slowing the progress of the National Amateur Championships.  Finally the weather has cleared and the Second Series of the Amateur Championships took place today.  Tomorrow will be the start of the Futurity, I think in the afternoon.

Glenn and I are getting ready to hit the road for Kansas to arrive in time for Elsie's run, a 13 hour drive from Carbondale, CO.  She's in the 37th brace and we expect her run to take place on Monday.  Elsie's littermates, Zorro and Cruzor, will run in the 7th and 9th braces, respectively.  Unfortunately that means we will likely miss their runs.

GSP National Futurity Post #1: Elsie leaves for the GSP Nationals

Some of you may know that I have been training my younger dog Elsie for the German Shorthaired Pointer Nationals for the last year and a half.  It's been a lot of work getting her and her litter mates ready, but it's also been a lot of fun and a great learning experience for me. 

Elsie and gang left with my friend and amateur field trialer, Gary Metzler, on Sunday, headed first to Nebraska for some more pre-training.  The Nationals will begin in Eureka, KS on October 13th at the Bechtel Ranch.  Elsie will run in the Futurity which is the top dogs under the age of two.  There are 37 braces running in the Futurity, which means 74 dogs total. 

I just got word last night that Elsie is doing great and handling birds in the field like a champ during her training runs.  Glenn and I will head out next weekend to Eureka, KS to watch the Elsie run.  I'll be posting throughout the next couple weeks, so check back often.
